Path

Spying a group of men lined up across the street, my curiosity got the better of me.

I crossed over and said to the men, “I say, good gentlemen, what are you queued up for?”

All but one man ignored me studiously.

One man without looking at me said, “I’m not queued up for anything, I have no idea what the other gentlemen are doing here.”

Confused, I had to slake my curiosity and asked, “Why are you here then?”

The man slowly turned his head and slyly winked at me, “I’m on my writer’s path, perchance this is your path too?”

Coffee

A cup of joe, jitter juice, java, morning jolt and go juice are a few of the slang phrases for my favorite beverage.

I like my coffee dark and bitter, just like my soul.

Some choose to dilute the wonderful fragrance and taste of coffee with all sorts of evil and vile substances like milk and sugar.

In the bible, it says that bread is the staff of life.

I say nay, coffee and only coffee is the staff of life.

How else could the Dunkin Donuts guy get up so early in the morning to make donuts?

Strike

Years of dedication, training, and withstanding pain all came down to this.

I wiped the sweat off my brow and tried to control my breathing, while the crowd hushed.

With my shoulders slightly hunched, I slowly took my first step with my left foot.

Stepping with increasing speed, until I slid to a stop on my left foot with my right leg bending behind as I threw the ball perfectly down the lane.

Strike!

The crowd went wild as I breathed a sigh of relief at bowling three perfect games in a row.

Key

Harry Gruen may at times be a fool, but he wasn’t stupid.

So far, his attempts to win over the bartender at Six Sentence Café & Bistro had fallen flat.

He knew he would have to up his game, so to speak, to impress her somehow.

Frivolity, charm and charisma had always been his strengths, but the bartender had been impervious to that set of skills.

He thought while he watered his ferns, Chinese evergreens and umbrella tree.

“Aha!” he exclaimed, “I know just the key to pique her interest in me will be …”

Ye Olde Six Sentence Story Book Shoppe

I’m amazed, grateful and humbled that I am included as one of the SSS Writers. If you look carefully, I’m on the back row second from the right.

I’ve only been writing six sentence stories for almost four months. Hard to believe it’s been that long. I’ve skipped a few here and there, but for the most part I’ve challenged myself to come up with a story each week.

At first, it was incredibly hard to do a story in only six sentences. As time went on and I practiced, it became easier. Then after reading some other Sixers, I decided to try my hand at doing a series. That upped the difficulty level but became easier as I wrote.

Lastly, I’ve taken on the challenge of inserting my character Harry Gruen into the Six Sentence Café & Bistro. Yes, a lot of chutzpah to join into an ongoing story that no less than six long time writers have been developing for a long time.

I fully expected to be piled with disdain, scorn and derision, but was welcome with open arms. This was a pleasant surprise. Now to be included into this hallow pantheon of writers is fantastic, though I somehow feel that maybe I was included just to round out the picture.

Regardless, I’m having a lot of fun doing these challenges. I highly encourage writers to give this a try. It has been a journey that I will not soon forget. If I can figure out how to get the image on my sidebar I will. For now, just click the picture above and it will take you to the creator of Book Shoppe and an amusing story of how she got the writers together for the picture.

Why Not?

Having some free time, Harry Gruen decided to stop by the Six Sentence Café & Bistro (SSC&B) and see his favorite bartender, Denise.

“Hello Luv!” He said as he slid onto the bar stool, “How about you fix me something to take the edge off and then we can talk about going out sometime.”

Denise gave Harry a quirky smile and turned to reach for a dusty bottle on the very top shelf.

She mixed a glass with a vial produced from underneath the bar and served the concoction that swirled with colors like a kaleidoscope to Harry.

Harry paused as the drink seemed familiar, but shrugged and lifted his glass, “Bottoms up, Luv.”

Harry woke up naked, upside down and duct taped to the flagpole thinking, “Not again!”

Fluid

My buddy handed me a glass with a laugh and said, “Here, drink this, I double-dog dare you.”

I took the glass and looked at the mysterious fluid within, swirling with color like a kaleidoscope.

“My motto has always been that I’ll try anything once, maybe twice, third times a habit.”

I downed the drink quickly expecting it to taste bad, however it was rather bland.

Next thing I knew, I was naked, upside down, and duct-taped to a flagpole outside the college administration building.

“Hmm, I don’t think I’ll be trying this one a second time.”

Detour

Business meetings took up almost all of my two week visit to France, but I was determined to do some sightseeing, so I called in sick.

Finally a chance to see Paris, I got into a taxi and off we went only to slow to a crawl.

I asked the cab driver, “Why is there so much traffic?”

“Detour mon ami.”

“Detour? Why are we on a detour?”

The cabbie laughed at my obvious confusion, “De Tour De France, the bicycle race!”

Confetti

Denise the bartender of Six Sentence Café & Bistro glared at Harry Gruen every time he ordered another drink because he kept calling her Luv.

Harry being Harry was oblivious and thought he was charming Denise with a twinkle in his eye and a disarming smile.

Eventually Denise, Mimi and Nick started to approach Harry together with the aim of throwing him out of the SSC&B.

Harry grinned and stood up saying, “Mimi, I have a message from your cousin”, as he withdrew a long tube from his jacket and pointed it at Mimi.

With a quick jerk of the tube, out popped colorful confetti covering Mimi, “Tag you’re it!”

Harry pressed a business card into Denise’s stunned hand saying, “Luv, give me a call sometime, we’ll go out,” as he sauntered toward the exit.

The Assignment

Harry Gruen entered the Six Sentence Café & Bistro and took a moment to look around thinking that this is a definite out of control bar.

He sidled up to the bar laying a twenty on the weathered top, “Luv, could you possibly pour me a brandy and take it to the table over in the corner?”

Denise, the bartender, looked Harry up and down thinking this is not someone that normally comes in here.

Harry eased into the booth and looked around again but didn’t spot his assigned target.

He smiled as he knew he would get to drink copious amounts of brandy before the night was over.
